Research

The ASC is the principal conduit for dissemination of research findings relevant to Cytopathology. The ASC Foundation routinely awards grants and funding for projects that result in publications of findings relevant to the practice of Cytopathology and the application of new technology. Moreover, the ASC Foundation funds projects related to translational research to develop new technologies in Cytopathology. The ASC also funds research to support best practices in Cytopathology.

ASC Foundation Investigator Grant
Cytology Shark Tank

Application Deadline has passed

Toward the mission of advancing innovation in cytopathology, the ASC Foundation announces an Investigator Grant that will embrace innovation with current and future concepts.

The ASC Foundation Investigator Grant consists of a $25,000 research Grant paid over two years to the successful applicant. The Grant is designed to fund investigators in the discovery of new knowledge related to the advancement of cytopathology.

Projects that apply existing technologies, procedures, and/or methods in an innovative fashion are encouraged. The research will commence on January 1, 2025.

The applicants will be evaluated by the ASC Research and Current Concepts Committee based on the relative strengths of the research and training plan, the support of the institution and the potential for obtaining competitive funding in the future. The ASC Foundation will approve the final selection of the top three proposals.

Grant Goals

  • To stimulate innovative research relevant to the field of cytopathology
  • To impact academic and career development of all investigators and to attract them to contribute to the field of cytopathology
  • To provide preliminary data for future funds from NIH and other funding sources.

Grant applications should

  • Define key steps or milestones on a critical pathway from the present level of research knowledge to the practical application.
  • Identify discrete barriers to this progress and strategies to overcome them.
  • Employ a unique perspective and innovative research methods.
  • Include plans for evaluating the process and outcome of the research effort.
  • Optional: include collaborations that allow diverse disciplines to contribute to the research effort.

The grant payment will be made to the Grants Office of the Institution at which the awardee is employed.

The Grant does not have to be awarded if the appropriate applications are not received. At the conclusion of the Grant period, an assessment will be measured of the published results.

Cytology Shark Tank, Orlando, Florida

The top three proposals will be asked to present their proposals to three judges during the ASC Annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando, Florida. Each finalist will present a three minute “pitch” on their research proposal at the end of the pitch the judges will have an opportunity to ask questions. The Researchers who dare to enter the Tank must try to convince the “Sharks” to give them funding for their research.

The top three researchers will have the opportunity to attend an interactive workshop demonstrating the power of improvisational techniques with teaching, team building, communication skills and increase science learning.

The recipient is encouraged to submit their final research data to the Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology (JASC). The recipient may be asked to present their results at the future Annual Scientific Meeting.
