Dr. Bernard Naylor Excellence in Cytomorphology Award

The ASC is announcing a new award for 2019 in memory of Dr. Bernard Naylor. The Dr. Bernard Naylor Excellence in Cytomorphology Award addressees a morphologic constituency that is not served by current awards. The Award highlights one of our most important skills in the field of our practice: Morphologic observation.

For those practicing cytopathology, morphology is an important part of our daily practice. Although ancillary studies - immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques are becoming more widely available and routinely used, with the reduced healthcare coverage and reimbursement rates one needs to learn how to practice medicine frugally and ethically in addition to accurately. Therefore, this award reminds us of the importance of "good old morphological observation" to everyone in the ASC.

This award will be awarded to any ASC member or applicant who may be a cytotechnology student, a cytotechnologist, a medical student, a pathology trainee or a pathologist. They can be working in any setting - be it in a developed country or an underdeveloped country - where perhaps ancillary studies are in scarcity and all one has to rely on for accurate diagnosis is one's morphological skills. Therefore, this will be an award that is inclusive to everyone in the field -all generations and all practice types.

The Dr. Bernard Naylor Excellence in Cytomorphology Award will promote the morphologic studies and show that the ASC appreciated those individuals who pursue morphological studies to help the advancement of the field and better serve our patients.

The criteria Dr. Bernard Naylor Excellence in Cytomorphology AwardD are:

  • This award is given to the best cytomorphological study with the most practical applications (e.g. newly described morphological features of a known entity such as highlighting the presence of cercariform cells in solid pseudopapillary tumors of the pancreas; or description of the cytomorphological features of a relatively newer entity such as FNA findings of a mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney.)
  • The study will be well thought out, well executed and well-written, and published within in the past calender year in a journal specializing cytopathology (e.g. JASC, Cancer Cytopathology, Diagnostic Cytopathology, etc.).
  • The awardee will be the first author of the publication and may be a cytotechnology student, cytotechnologist, medical student, pathology resident, cytopathology fellow, or a pathologist
  • The winner will be announced at the ASC Annual Scientific Meeting.

The awardee will be awarded free registration to the Annual ASC meeting, and a $500 honorarium. Deadline for submitting applications are September 15, 2019
